Are all of your items handmade?
Every piece from Mud + Maker is thrown, trimmed, glazed, and fired by hand – no molds, no mass production. As a result, each item carries its own quirks: a slight curve, a subtle mark, a glaze that breaks just so. That’s not a flaw – it’s the fingerprint of a slower process. It’s what makes your piece yours.
What’s the deal with postage and deliveries?
We offer free local delivery and collection in and around Liverpool – just use code LIVERPOOL-DROP-OFF at checkout. We’re always happy to meet you halfway. If you use this code, look out for an email from us to arrange the details. This code can only be used for customers in the Liverpool region, orders beyond a 10-mile radius of Liverpool city centre will be rejected unless you would like to collect from this locality.
For all other UK orders, delivery is calculated based on the size and weight of your order, but we do our best to keep it as low as possible. Ceramics aren’t light, but we pack smart – and never with plastic.
Every parcel is shipped using 100% recyclable, plastic-free packaging. We believe in objects that last and materials that don’t – no bubble wrap, no unnecessary extras, just sturdy, sustainable packaging that does its job without leaving a mark on the planet.
What's your return policy?
Because each piece is handmade in small batches, we don’t generally accept returns. That said, we want you to love what you receive.
If there’s an issue with your order – it arrived damaged, or something doesn’t feel right – please get in touch. We’ll always do our best to make it right.
Can I put it in the dishwasher or microwave?
Yes. All of our pieces are made from durable stoneware or porcelain, high-fired for strength and finished with food-safe glazes. That means they’re totally fine to go in the dishwasher and microwave. That said, treating them with care will help them last even longer – think of them like a well-made coat or a good record collection: practical, but still worth looking after.
What’s the wait time for custom orders or items on back-order?
We work slowly, because clay asks us to. Every single item goes through multiple stages – wedged, thrown or hand-built, dried, trimmed, dried again, fired once, glazed, dried, and fired a second time. Some steps take days. Others take weeks. That’s part of the beauty.
If something is marked as made-to-order or back-ordered, expect a wait of 3-5 weeks depending on the piece. For commissions, we’ll give you a clearer idea once we chat. Either way, we can keep you updated with pictures through the whole process – you won’t be left wondering.
Can I find your work in any shops?
Not yet – but hopefully soon. We’re keeping things small and hands-on for now, but we’re working on getting stocked in a few select places. In the meantime, you can check out our Instagram for updates on upcoming markets, pop-ups, and any new stockists.
What’s with the product names?
If you’ve spotted the pattern – good eye. Our pieces are named after mid-century, Bauhaus, and space-age designers, architects, and artists – people like Marcel Breuer, Alvar Aalto, and Pierre Paulin. These were thinkers who challenged ideas of function, beauty, and material. They designed furniture that felt like sculpture, architecture that felt like rhythm, objects that were playful but still deeply intentional.
Their approach to design – shape, balance, tactility – is a huge inspiration in the studio. Naming each piece after one of them is both a quiet homage and a way to place the work in a larger conversation. Plus, it beats calling something “Medium Mug No. 7.”
